What it is

"Medicare has a program called the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan."

"It lets you spread out what you pay for Medicare prescription drugs over monthly bills instead of paying large amounts at the pharmacy early in the year."

What it does and does not do

• "It does not lower the total cost of your medications for the year."
• "It changes when and how you pay."
• "There is no cost to sign up."

What changes if the patient enrolls

• "You usually do not pay the pharmacy when you pick up covered Medicare prescriptions."
• "Your Medicare drug plan sends you a monthly bill instead."
• "You still pay your monthly plan premium if you have one."

Important expectations

• "Monthly bills can change if medications change."
• "This works best for people with high prescription costs earlier in the year."

How to enroll

• "You must contact your Medicare drug plan directly."
• "Call the member services number on the back of your plan card."
• "You can also call 1-800-MEDICARE at 1-800-633-4227."

When you call, say: "I want to enroll in the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan."

"By law, Medicare drug plans are required to offer this program and help you enroll."

Pharmacy role

• "The pharmacy may provide a Medicare notice and direct you to your plan."

If there are problems
