Private insurance remained the largest source of coverage across the modern series. Medicare and Medicaid grew, while the uninsured rate fell sharply after the Affordable Care Act's major coverage provisions took effect in 2014. Because people can have more than one type of coverage during a year, the payor lines do not add to 100 percent.

Why the lines break: the gaps mark major Census source-series, questionnaire, or processing changes. Estimates on opposite sides of a gap are not connected as though they were one perfectly continuous series.
